4.1 This guide is intended to assist in the selection of appropriate tests to assess the expected general performance level of a coating or coating system on a given substrate exposed to a given type of environment. Table 1 lists all the tests.

4.2 The importance of surface treatment or cleanliness prior to coating to the normal performance of the coating is needless to say.

4.3 The results obtained in the tests referenced in this Guide may not be sufficient to predict the coating life of a particular coating system under a particular environmental exposure. The test should include the use of appropriate control coating systems with known properties in the environment for comparison purposes.

1.1 This guide covers the selection and use of test methods and procedures for testing industrial protective coatings. The choice of standards to follow needs to be based on experience and the requirements of each case, as well as the agreement between the supplier and the user.

1.2 This guide covers the testing of liquid coatings applied to substrates by brushing, walcowanie, spraying or other methods suitable for the coating and environment.
