This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 14, Protective Coating Systems for Steel Structures.

The second edition cancels and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 12944-8:1998).

The main changes from the previous edition are as follows:

– Terms and definitions have been updated;

– Water-soluble contaminants and dust have been added to Table 1 as special restrictions on surfaces and surface treatment;

– Annex E has been updated in terms of corrosion rating;

– Annex I has been updated in terms of surface preparation;

Unprotected steel in the atmosphere, water and soil can be corroded, leading to damage. Therefore, in order to avoid corrosion damage, steel structures are usually protected to withstand the corrosion stress that will be endured during the required service life of the structure.

There are different ways to protect steel structures from corrosion. ISO 12944 (All parts) deals with the protection of coating systems and covers, and in the individual components, all functions are important to achieve adequate corrosion protection. Other measures or other measures may be taken, but require special agreement between the parties concerned.

In order to ensure the effective corrosion protection of steel structures, owners of such structures, planners, consultants, companies performing corrosion protection work, protective coating inspectors and coating material manufacturers need to have new information on the corrosion protection of coating systems. It goes without saying that such information should be as complete, clear and easy to understand as possible in order to avoid difficulties and misunderstandings in the actual implementation of protection work by the parties concerned.

ISO 12944 (all parts) aims to provide this information in the form of a series of instructions. It is written for those who have some technical knowledge. It is also assumed that users of ISO 12944 (all parts) are familiar with other relevant international standards, particularly those dealing with surface treatment.

In addition, it includes a general statement on health, safety and environmental protection, as well as guidance on the use of ISO 12944 in specific projects.

This document is intended as an aid when drafting corrosion protection specifications.

1 Range
This document covers the development of corrosion protection specifications for steel structures using protective coating systems. It involves new work and maintenance in the workshop or on site, and also applies to corrosion protection of individual components. This document covers corrosion protection of steel structures under different corrosion stresses in environments such as indoor, open air and immersed in water or buried in soil, as well as due to special stresses such as medium to high temperatures. The need for different durability ranges is considered.

Steel surfaces that have been hot-dipped galvanized, metal-sprayed, galvanized or serrated, as well as previously painted steel surfaces, are also included in this document.

In this document, reference areas are addressed to evaluate the quality of corrosion protection work and the performance of the protective coating systems used. This document provides detailed flow charts for planning new work and maintenance, which will be considered when writing the specification.

This document can also be used as a guide if extreme corrosive stresses or high temperatures occur, or if the protective coating system is used on other substrates, such as non-ferrous metals or concrete, to define suitable specifications.

3 Terms and definitions

3.1 Component Elements

Part of a structure that is exposed to a specific environment and therefore requires specific protective coating system specifications (3.8.2)

Dry film thickness (3.2) specified for each coat or entire coating system to achieve desired durability (3.3)
