ASTM D6762-2018 “Determination of Covering Power of Coatings by Self-Evaluation of Spraying Construction Coatings”

Meaning and use
5.1 The test method determines the coverage of the test coating by visually evaluating the sprayed coating.

Note 1 Test method D2805 describes an instrumental method for determining coverage. Apply the film to a uniform thickness (e.g. with a scraper), measure the film thickness strictly, and determine the opacity by photometry. Thus the concealment force can be determined with high precision.

5.2 Test method D6762 is not as accurate as test method D2805, but it is widely used because it is closely related to the application characteristics of paints and is simpler in terms of concept and evaluation.

Step 1: Scope
1.1 This test method enables quantitative visual determination of the film thickness required for complete coverage. The film thickness is considered to test the coating’s hiding power.

1.2 The method is applicable only to sprayed coatings, but the concept can also be applied to other applications.

1.3 Values expressed in inches to pounds shall be treated as standard values. The values given in brackets are mathematical conversions of SI units for reference only and are not considered as standards.

1.4 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.5 This international standard is based on internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).
